North American Council Appoints Director of Communications

New York: August 10, 2011—Mr. Sigmund Rolat, Chairman of The North American Council of the History of Polish Jews, announced the appointment of Ms. Jeanette Friedman as Director of Communications.  Ms. Friedman will be responsible for the public and press relations strategy for the Council, and will serve as editor of its newsletter.

Ms. Friedman has wide experience as a freelance journalist, editor and publisher and received several awards, including the I.F.Stone award, from Brooklyn College. She is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and has written books and articles covering American and Jewish history, popular culture, ethics, and the Holocaust. She is the author of Why Should I Care? Lessons from the Holocaust, an interactive book for young adults, written with David Gold.

From 1990 to 2004 she was executive editor of the Jewish magazine Lifestyles, where she profiled public figures such as Ariel Sharon, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Steven Spielberg, Sumner Redstone, Donna Karan, and Robin Williams, as well as many other celebrities and people of influence in American-Jewish life. From 2004 to 2008 she was research assistant and director of public relations for Rabbi Jack Bemporad at the Center for Interreligious Understanding.  She is the editor of Together, published by the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Their Descendants and is New York Bureau Chief for the San Diego Jewish World. She contributes to the Jewish Standard of New Jersey, newjerseynewsroom.com, Politics Daily, AOL and other digital and print publications. Jeanette is also active on behalf of various causes, notably in advocacy for Holocaust education and women’s rights.
